Changing accountant? What should my business look for from an accountant?

Changing accountant is the road less travelled because hiring an accountant for your business isn’t something business owners do very often.

So this is for you if you are:

  • looking for an accountant for your business
  • wondering whether your existing accountant is doing the right job
  • thinking of changing your accountant

And it’s not about what we accountants think we do.

It’s about what MDs value

Business owners say things like this:

What MDs say they value in their accountant

Hygiene and so much more

Let’s make a distinction between the “hygiene” work (bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, annual accounts, tax returns) and what wraps around it.

Every business needs the hygiene work doing and most accountants and bookkeepers offer it. And let’s not belittle it – hygiene work done poorly or done late can leave you with a pile of problems that will impact your business and your profit.

But most MDs want and need more, even if they can’t quite put their finger on what “more” looks like.

More” may include:

  • an objective sounding-board
  • profitability analysis
  • rapport
  • cashflow
  • connections
  • regular management accounts

More” may well change over time. Hygiene won’t change so much.

But none of this happens unless……

None of this can happen if your accountant doesn’t really understand your business and the markets you work in.

Which is why we start every new business relationship with a chat about your business – what it does, where, how and what you want to get out of it.

So, if you’re:

  • looking for an accountant for your business
  • wondering whether your existing accountant is doing the right job
  • thinking of changing your accountant
